Walk into any Walgreens or CVS and you'll find entire aisles dedicated to calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, and zinc. There are entire sections devoted to iron. Selenium gets its own shelf space. But you'll search a long time before you find boron, and if you ask most people — including most physicians — what boron does in the human body, you'll probably get a blank stare.

Boron is element number 5, sitting in the second row of the periodic table, sandwiched between beryllium and carbon. In industrial terms, it's famous for making Pyrex glass heat-resistant, giving fiberglass its strength, and serving as a neutron absorber in nuclear reactors. None of that sounds particularly relevant to your health.

But here's the thing: your body uses boron, and when it doesn't get enough, the effects are real and measurable. The story of why this element disappeared from mainstream nutrition conversations is almost as interesting as the chemistry itself.

What Boron Actually Does in Your Body

Let's start with bones, because that's where boron's biological résumé is strongest.

Boron appears to influence how your body handles calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus — the primary minerals your skeleton is built from. Research suggests that boron helps regulate the enzymes involved in bone metabolism and may affect the activity of vitamin D, which is the master regulator of calcium absorption. In studies where participants were put on low-boron diets, they excreted more calcium and magnesium in their urine — essentially losing the building blocks of bone faster than they should.

For postmenopausal women, who are already at elevated risk for osteoporosis, this matters quite a bit. A landmark study in the late 1980s by researcher Forrest Nielsen at the USDA found that boron supplementation significantly reduced the urinary loss of calcium and magnesium in this population. It also appeared to increase blood levels of estrogen and testosterone — hormones that play a role in maintaining bone density.

That's a lot of downstream effects from a trace element most people have never thought about.

Your Brain on Boron

Bone health gets most of the attention, but boron's influence on brain function is equally intriguing and considerably less discussed.

Studies going back to the 1990s, largely conducted by researcher James Penland, found that low dietary boron was associated with measurable changes in brain activity. Participants on low-boron diets showed EEG patterns suggesting lower alertness — essentially, their brains were operating in a more sluggish state. They performed worse on tasks involving attention, memory, and motor coordination. When boron was added back into their diets, brain activity patterns improved.

To be clear: this doesn't mean boron is a nootropic you should be megadosing. The research is suggesting that adequate boron keeps your brain running the way it should — not that extra boron makes you smarter. Think of it like sleep: getting enough doesn't give you superpowers, but not getting enough definitely makes you worse.

The mechanism isn't completely nailed down, but researchers think boron may influence the activity of certain enzymes in the brain and play a role in how neurons use energy.

The Inflammation Connection

More recent research has added another dimension to boron's biological profile: inflammation. Several studies have found that boron affects the production of inflammatory cytokines — the signaling molecules that drive chronic inflammation. Adequate boron intake appears to be associated with lower levels of certain inflammatory markers.

This is particularly relevant in the American context, where chronic low-grade inflammation is increasingly recognized as an underlying factor in conditions ranging from heart disease to type 2 diabetes to arthritis. The research here is still developing, but it adds another reason to pay attention to this overlooked element.

Boron has also shown up in research on wound healing, where it appears to support tissue repair, and on kidney stone risk, where adequate boron intake may be associated with lower rates of calcium oxalate stones. The picture that emerges is of an element that quietly keeps multiple systems running smoothly in the background.

So Why Have You Never Heard of This?

Here's where it gets interesting. Boron doesn't have an established Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) in the United States. The Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academies has set a Tolerable Upper Intake Level — meaning a ceiling for how much is too much — but hasn't established a formal minimum recommendation. That absence of an official RDA means boron doesn't appear on nutrition labels, isn't included in most multivitamins, and rarely comes up in clinical nutrition conversations.

Why no RDA? Partly because the research, while suggestive, hasn't reached the level of certainty that regulatory bodies require to set formal recommendations. Partly because boron deficiency is difficult to diagnose — there's no widely used blood test for boron status the way there is for iron or vitamin D. And partly, frankly, because nutrition research funding tends to follow established priorities, and boron has never had a powerful lobby pushing for its inclusion.

There's also a historical quirk worth noting: borax, a boron compound, was used as a food preservative in the early 20th century. It was eventually banned by the FDA after some studies suggested it could be harmful at high doses. That regulatory history may have cast a shadow over boron's reputation in nutrition science, even though the doses used in food preservation were far higher than what any researcher is suggesting for dietary intake.

Where to Actually Find Boron

The good news is that boron is naturally present in a lot of foods that American nutritionists already recommend for other reasons. The richest dietary sources include:

Estimates of average American boron intake range from about 1 to 3 milligrams per day. Researchers studying boron's biological effects have typically used supplemental doses in the 3 to 6 mg range without observing adverse effects. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level set by the National Academies is 20 mg per day for adults, which means there's a reasonable margin between typical intake and any level of concern.

If your diet is already heavy on fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes, you're probably getting adequate boron. If it's heavy on processed foods, refined grains, and meat with minimal plant foods — a pattern that's unfortunately common in the US — your boron intake might be lower than optimal.

Should You Start Supplementing?

That's a conversation worth having with your doctor, especially if you have concerns about bone density or are in a demographic at higher risk for osteoporosis. Boron supplements do exist and are generally inexpensive, but as with any supplement, more isn't automatically better.

What's more actionable for most people is simply eating more of the plant foods that happen to be rich in boron. Avocado toast, a handful of almonds, an apple — you're probably already eating some of these, and they deliver boron alongside a whole package of other beneficial nutrients.

Boron may never get its own supplement commercial or its own section at the pharmacy. It's not flashy. It doesn't have a celebrity spokesperson. It just quietly helps hold your skeleton together, keeps your brain alert, and damps down inflammation — the kind of unglamorous, behind-the-scenes chemistry that the periodic table specializes in.

Element 5 has been doing its job this whole time. We just forgot to notice.
